HDD Upgrade Time: Acard ANS-9010 vs Gigabyte I-RAM vs SSD

Storage/SSD by massman @ 2009-04-13

As an alternative to the slow platter-based hard drives there already a few ram disk-based solutions on the market. Acard recently designed their ram disk product, which allows users to use DDR2 memory as storage method. Today, we have a look at the performance of the Acard ANS-9010 and compare it with normal hard disk drives, SSD technology and other ram disks.

For the overclockers and benchmarkers this is very interesting. An Acard Raid0 configuration is more powerful than 3x iRam in Raid0, which means that it's not necessary anymore to have a second rig running next to your overclocking system to power all iRams (via PCI).

Madshrimps (c)

The OCZ SSD is quite a lot faster than a normal hard disk drive, but is overpowered by any ramdisk configuration.

Madshrimps (c)

It seems that the DDR2 of the Acard ANS-9010 is giving a nice boost over the DDR1 on the iRam.

Madshrimps (c)

Again, DDR2 seems to be better. Note that 3xiRam is in this subtest faster than a dual slot Raid0 Acard configuration.

Madshrimps (c)

The biggest gain from switching to Raid0 is located in this subtest. Note that the Western Digital isn't that far behind the OCZ SSD.

Madshrimps (c)

3x iRam wins this round, DDR2 is again better than DDR1 and the plattered Western Digital is not too far behind the SSD.
