Intel Quad Core Q9300 Goes Subzero - OC Fun

Overclocking/Overclocking Tests by massman @ 2008-05-02

Our previous overclocking review with the Intel E8500 was quite a success; we were allowed this time to push an Intel Q9300 ES to the limit using sub zero cooling. This CPU comes straight from Alternate.be and is the most affordable Intel Quad Core build on 45nm.

Evaluation

We came across some oddities and problems when testing. If you’re planning on buying/overclocking your Intel Quad Core, this info will come in handy:

  • The Intel quad cores are known to be FSB-limited around 500FSB, which was exactly what we noticed as well. Some motherboards are handling the Quad cores better than others, but 500FSB fully stable is pretty hard to accomplish. The Dfi P35 was not suited to handle +500FSB stable in despite of the extremely high voltages.
  • The colder the processor, the higher the FSB-wall. Our initial testing at 1,65v were bad, but when we turned the voltage down to 1,5v (which still is more than enough for 4GHz 45nm C2Q), the overclocking went better and better. With a Single Stage Phase Change Cooling, it seems that you've got to find a balance between temperature and voltage.
  • The memory we've used in the benchmarks, 2 * 512MB Transcand PC2-6400 was donated by Madshrimps reviewer, Gamer. These are the best kits I've worked with and only cost a mere €50. It's, in other words, not that expensive to find good overclocking memory.
