2Mb and 8Mb cache size on HDs tested in RAID

Storage/HDD by jmke @ 2003-06-12

How does a 2mb cache harddisk compare to its bigger 8mb cache brother? We test them in different RAID setups, using real word benchmarks to show you the actual difference! Software RAID 0 / Hardware RAID 1 / 0 with Stripe sizes: 1 - 4 - 16 - 64 - 512.

Compare - Sisoft Sandra

Sisoft Sandra Comparison:

Madshrimps (c)

The Sisoft Sandra overall results relies heavily on the average write speeds of the disk arrays. The large SS Raid setups bring the highest scores. RAID 1 shows the same results here, slightly lower results then none-raid, while the software RAID 0 stands its ground, quite astonishing for only a "soft" solution!

Madshrimps (c)

Average access time drops when using RAID. RAID 1 shows the smallest improvement while the 512k SS gives the best results here.

Enough with the synthetic data, how do they compare in real life applications?....
