AMD Athlon 3000+ Overclocking, going for 100% OC on Dry Ice

Overclocking/Overclocking Tests by massman @ 2007-05-06

We overclock a golden oldie, the Athlon 3000+ was a favorite among hardware enthusiasts back in May 2005, now-a-days it´s Core 2 Duo, but with the help of some Dry Ice we can extract a bit more power from this AMD CPU. Read on to find out if we reach our 100% overclocking goal.

The OC fun begins

The fun begins, 10kg of dry ice pelts on the wall...

Without active CPU cooling the lack of airflow has its effect on the chipset and memory modules, so I added a fan to help cool them down.

Frost pops up at the top of the tube during the session.

I opened the window to let in a cold breeze from the outside, I’m sure my parents were wondering why I was sitting behind my PC in winter clothes… for going outside.

The DFI SmartGuardian software doesn’t cope well with negative software, you need to subtract 256 from the value you see in the screenshot below (224-256 = -32°C)

Adding a low end VGA card into the mix, I mounted a smaller copper tube on a 7300GT; but the fun didn’t last very long, the graphics card test was done on impulse and I had not insulated the PCI Express slot of the motherboard so I aborted the tests before I wrecked my hardware due to condensation.

At the end of the benchmark session I was left with one frosted copper tube:
