AMD XP Aircooling - Heatsink Roundup Q4 2003

Cooling/CPU Cooling by jmke @ 2004-01-07

We go for silent! The average AMD setup still sounds like a jet taking off. Swiftech, Thermalright and other heatsink manufacturers are trying their best to provide us with a silent solution to cool these hot potatoes. Do they succeed? And which one does it best?

Swiftech MCX462-V

Swiftech MCX462-V :

This heatsink is of very high build quality; with a massive copper base which is lapped and polished to a mirror finish it can absorb a lot of heat. Helicoid pins are placed in the base facing outwards "like a flower" to provide the best possible cooling at the lowest fan-speeds. This design will also further reduce noise as the friction with the air is minimal.

For those craving for more performance, you can go and add a 80mm Vantec Tornado fan which will increase the performance of this heatsink tenfold, providing you with a high performance air-cooling solution
It takes you only 2min to swap the 4 brackets at each corner of the heatsink to change the support from 80mm to 90mm fans, although I must admit that the "dead" zone of the 90mm fan in the centre has a negative impact on the performance of this heatsink.

The retention mechanism is very easy. You slip the heatsink over the socket, and then unscrew the two head screws; the springs will then create a tension which will give you more then enough pressure on the core. I had this baby installed in less then 2min!
