KIOXIA XG6-P Series 2TB SSD Review

Storage/SSD by stefan @ 2021-10-25

By incorporating Toshiba’s 96L BiCS4 3D TLC NAND, the TC58NCP090GSD 8-channel controller and RAM cache for storing the mapping tables, Kioxia has built a well-performing M.2 SSD on the PCIe 3.1a bus, while offering enough storage for most applications. This model is mainly used in OEM, workstation systems for handling tough situations like tons of security software, Bitlocker and without a capable drive, the system will get slow fast, even when using a latest-gen CPU.

Packaging, A Closer Look

KIOXIA has sent us one sample of their XG6-P SSD series, which is mainly used in the OEM market. The P at the end of the product naming is added only with the 2TB model, the rest of capacities carrying the XG6 naming. The XG6 series of products comes with Toshiba’s 96L BiCS4 3D TLC NAND packages and a Toshiba-made controller with 8 channels.

Since we are dealing with an OEM product, there is no retail packaging; the drive has arrived as bulk and on the frontal area of the PCB we did note a large sticker, housing the product code name, firmware code name, the manufacturing date, the power rating and more!

On the back side we did not spot any additional components, making this SKU single-sided:

The SSD comes with a DRAM IC for caching purposes, a central Toshiba controller but also two NAND packages (1TB capacity each):

The DRAM used on the XG6-P was manufactured by Nanya and carries the model number

NT6CL512T32AM-H1, it is of DDR3L type and is designed to run at 1866MHz (2GB capacity):

The TC58NCP090GSD 8-channel controller can be found nearby. It is communicating with the host computer over a PCIe 3.1a x4 interface with the NVMe 1.3a protocol:

The two TH58LJT3X24BAEG 96L BiCS4 3D TLC NAND packages are next:
