Patriot P300 M.2 PCIe Gen 3 x4 1TB SSD Review

Storage/SSD by stefan @ 2020-09-28

Even if the P300 is a DRAMless implementation with the Silicon Motion 4-channel SM2263XT, the drive supports Host Memory Buffer and coupled with the pseudo-SLC caching in the NAND ICs, we do get decent performance while writing continuously to the drive, in many cases exceeding the performance we would get with a mechanical drive. The performance will vary depending on the system you are using the drive on and the 1TB version of the P300 comes with rating of 320TB TBW.

Packaging, A Closer Look

Patriot Memory does have a new SSD model to cover the entry level fast storage segment named as P300. This one comes, surprisingly in two variants: US and Regional; the US one does have a blue PCB and packs a Phison PS5013-E13T controller, while the non-US includes a black PCB and a Silicon Motion SM2263XT controller. The manufacturer claims that the performance difference between the two models is not noticeable, while the drive can be purchased with different capacity options (even an 128GB model is available!).

The product includes a 3-year warranty, while the rated TBW is at 320TB. Its packaging is like the ones we have seen along with USB Flash Drives and memory cards, a combination of cardboard and protective plastic in the middle:

On the back side of the cardboard enclosure we will find some product highlights, listed in multiple languages, the product serial number, details on the Patriot Memory offices but links to some online resources:

The drive is also protected inside a transparent plastic enclosure, in order to avoid issues during transit:

On the top PCB area of the drive we will note the product internal code name, the total capacity and more!

The back area of the drive does not contain any extra components:

After the removal of the large sticker, we will note four NAND IC packages, but also the main controller:

Silicon Motion SM2263XT is a 4-channel controller DRAMless solution and supports HMB (Host Memory Buffer) in order to use the system memory for caching purposes:

The drive storage ICs are Toshiba BiCS 3D TLC NAND and each houses 256GB of storage:
