Toshiba OCZ VX500 512GB High Endurance SSD Review

Storage/SSD by stefan @ 2016-09-13

The mainstream OCZ VX500 SSD from Toshiba falls between the RD400 and the value-oriented TR150; with 15nm MLC Flash and capacities up to 1TB, the VX500 does also come with 5 years of warranty and an endurance between 74 and 592 TBW (Terabytes Written, based on JEDEC standard). This particular model incorporates the Toshiba TC358790XBG, which is known as very reliable and was used before with Toshibas’ Enterprise SSD HK3R series.

Plenty of previously reviewed SSDs we have reviewed in the past did come with a low-cost screw-less chassis design; this is not the case for the Toshiba VX500! After the removal of the four screws, we were able to remove the bottom cover; a thin insulation film is also available between the cover and the SSD PCB:

The PCB is held to the chassis with four more screws and after its removal we will get to see that each NAND chip along with the controller are using thermal pads in order to facilitate cooling:

No less than 8 Toshiba 15nm MLC NAND flash chips are available here for the 512GB version of the drive:

The central controller is a Toshiba TC358790XBG part, no extra details being released about it so far; it is known as very reliable and was used before with Toshibas’ Enterprise SSD HK3R series

No extra components are to be found on the back side of the PCB:
