CORSAIR CARBIDE SPEC 01 Gaming Case Review

Cases & PSU/Cases by leeghoofd @ 2014-08-18

Corsair surprised friend and foe when they released the Carbide SPEC series: three affordable gaming enclosures would join the ranks of Corsairs elite enclosure lineup. With affordable Corsair really meant affordable; take for example the SPEC 01 which retails at just below the 50 dollar mark, thus similar priced as many OEM products. Usually the latter means low build quality, average hardware compatibility, a maximum trim down in functionality and features to keep the price as low as possible. In fact everything which a CORSAIR case is renowned for is missing in many OEM solutions. Time for the Fremont giant to show the world it can be done differently.

A Closer Look

The Corsair Carbide SPEC 01 features removable ventilated brackets. Each one secured by a screw and double secured by a second mounting plate. another big advantage over the Cougar solution which went  for the cheapest solution possible: once removable brackets.

A single front fan is charged with the task to provide the installed hardware with decent airflow to warrant stable operations. Once the setup is powered on, the Red LEDs will provide that little extra bling for your gaming desktop.

The front I/O panel is sparse, with only two USB ports. Again not totally unexpected for a case in this price category. Though it would have been nice to see two USB3.0 ports instead off the opted single USB 2.0 and 3.0 port. Similar to the red LED on the front fan, a small bar will glow up, too bad it isn't a Knight Rider glow.. For the rest the power & reset buttons and the mandatory audio in and out jacks.

The Carbide SPEC 01 is equipped with a dust filter in the removable front panel and one for the Power supply. The later can easily slide for fast cleaning.

Storage wise, for 3.5 inch HDD platters no screwdriver intervention is required, 2.5 or SSD drives can be fixed to the removable HDD trays by four small screws. The power supply rests on four small rubber dampers to reduce the vibrations.
