Intel Pentium 20th Anniversary Edition G3258 CPU Review

CPU by leeghoofd @ 2014-06-16

Intel announced earlier this year the Haswell refresh lineup together with the release of their latest mainstream chipset, the Z97. This refresh release was overshadowed by the eagerly awaited high end K SKU Devils Canyon and the low end 20th Anniversary Pentium processor; especially the latter is a very interesting product as it now sports a fully unlocked multiplier and retails at an insane low price. We have to thank the boys from Denmark Zzolio and Riska which allowed us to spend some time with their G3258 Pentium ES processor.

3D Synthetic Tests

Futuremarks 3DMark11 is heavily CPU dependent; the more cores you throw at it, the higher the outcome will be. Though the benchmark also reveals the sheer power of the processor backing up the graphics card in the GPU test. Especially in the latter we see the Pentium again outpacing the AMD processors, no matter if we compare the Pentium versus the Kaveri APU or versus the high end FX octa-core models. The total score is however a combination of the GPU, CPU and combined scores; there again the dual cores have to give way to the rest of the field.

The Catzilla benchmark from AllBenchmark is gaining popularity due to its high tweaking nature. The 720P outcome is less GPU bound then the high detail 1440P test, so it is no surprise to see decent scores of even the dual core processor when everything becomes graphics card limited. In the lower detail 720P test the Pentium model is on par with the latest AMD APU offerings.

The free downloadable Resident Evil 6 benchmark shows a slight advantage for the Intel counterparts. The dual core Pentiums provide a tough challenge for the AMD processors.
