Intel Pentium 20th Anniversary Edition G3258 CPU Review

CPU by leeghoofd @ 2014-06-16

Intel announced earlier this year the Haswell refresh lineup together with the release of their latest mainstream chipset, the Z97. This refresh release was overshadowed by the eagerly awaited high end K SKU Devils Canyon and the low end 20th Anniversary Pentium processor; especially the latter is a very interesting product as it now sports a fully unlocked multiplier and retails at an insane low price. We have to thank the boys from Denmark Zzolio and Riska which allowed us to spend some time with their G3258 Pentium ES processor.

3D Gaming Tests

Time to discover whether the synthetic tests were right; running three games: Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider and Sleeping dogs in two detail presets. Testing high and Ultra detail mode at the native HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

In Bioshock Infinite we see the little dual core Pentium outperforming AMD's high end FX models. Yet it has to be mentioned that the discrete 7970HD card still has got plenty of calculating power for any modern game and this can be clearly shown in the below graphs. Since not all games are optimized for multi-core environments a decent powered dual core can still provide smooth game play. Loading times might suffer versus quad core models, though for a cheap gaming setup these Pentiums are quite an affordable solution.
