Aerocool DS Cube Computer Case Review

Cases & PSU/Cases by leeghoofd @ 2014-03-21

Taiwanese case manufacturer Aerocool is known for its affordable enclosures, however that doesn't necessarily imply the products are inferior in design nor quality. Sadly our last encounter with an Aerocool product was not that stellar. The full tower GT-S case was overpriced, especially looking at the build quality and cooling performance it delivered. This more humble looking DS cube could change our state of mind; featuring mATX and mITX compatibility, the provision to install an optical drive, being water cooling ready and even normal sized air coolers can be installed in this Dead Silence Cube. Could this DS be one of the main competitors in the HTPC or portable mini game PC market? Time to open the box to discover the Aerocool's Cube offering.

Conclusion

Aerocool has created an elegant design with their Dead Silent Cube case; the numerous available color patterns, plus the option to go for either a full cover or windowed version opens up a broad market. Aesthetically wise this case will for sure attract a crowd.

Secondly the hardware compatibility is great; this is the first cube case tested here that allows the utilization of normal sized tower processor coolers up to 190mm. This is a great option as neither the Corsair 250D, nor the Fractal Node allowed a 120m Fan equipped Tower cooler to be installed. Of course the dimensions of this DS case are far superior to the two other aforementioned cube cases, therefore also mATX boards are supported, another plus point. The GPU compatibility is also great, cards up to 320mm are supported. Storage wise the two 2.5" and two 3.5" bays will fulfill the need for most demanding users.

The only drawback with this DS Cube enclosure is the lack of a front dust filter and the very slow spinning Fans, especially the first remark is either pure negligence of the Aerocool design team or a way to minimize costs.  However we have seen the same flaw with the GT-S full tower case; such a shame, as the little added cost would be a big plus during day to day usage.

To sum it up: the Aerocool DS is an interesting design to say the least, sporting great hardware compatibility, of course aided by its oversized dimensions. The multi-colored line up and sleek design will definitely attract a big audience. Overall build quality is okay, though the front fan leaves some room for improvement. Slightly more powerful fans could have topped it off, alike the inclusion of a front dust filter. Retailing around 65 euros the Aerocool DS is not a bad bargain at all and enables Aerocool to position itself in the cube market !
