Cooler Master Silencio 550 Case Review

Cases & PSU/Cases by leeghoofd @ 2012-02-21

With todays powerful hardware components, most computer case designs are mainly focused on maximizing airflow. Sometimes compromising on one vital aspect, which is noise reduction. It's pretty hard to get a decent balance in a midi sized tower between decent airflow and near silent operation. Cooler Master is targeting, with this Silencio 550, those that look to build a silent PC. Yet no compromises are made in build quality, air flow is decent to warrant safe operation and all this with a very affordable price tag.

Conclusion

Without being real innovative in design, this Silencio 550 is a very fine case. Sporting adequate airflow, thanks to the two preinstalled 120mm fans. Dust buildup is no issue, as the front fan(s) and the PSU fan got quick removable dust filters.

The noise damping foam on the sidepanels and front bezel door will reduce noise coming from HDDs and CPU/GPU fans with a few decibels. Nothing eartshaking, but for a purist, this will be a welcome noise reduction.

Cable management, with our selection of components, was a no brainer. Though the lower cutout, could have been slightly bigger, to facilitate the cable routing. Placing the rear side panel takes some patience, as the foam presses on the tucked away cables. But in the end, you will be rewarded with a very clean build and a PC with a far more optimised airflow. The missing rubber cutout inlays probably help to reduce the price, though would have been a nice addition to the finishing touch.

The Hot Swappable HDD X-docking station and the SD Card Reader, were two big surprises to be included in this 70 euro case. A very affordable price if you ask me, for the given build quality. Decent ventilation, the all black pro finish design, removable HDD cage for maximum GPU support, make this Silencio 550 another nice addition to Cooler Master's already huge lineup. A few extra USB ports on the front panel would have topped it all off.

All in all is the Silencio a decent case that can serve for many purposes, being it for a home PC or a game version. Another case that Madshrimps can heartly recommend to it's readers !

We award the Silencio 550 the value award, not because it's the most cheap case. But the noise damping foam, hot swappable docking station and card reader add up to the value of this case. And all this for sub 70 euros is not a bad deal at all. Just add a few more USB ports plz mister Cooler Master to the front panel !

Pro's :

  • Silent in operation.
  • Anti noise foam used.
  • GPU compatibility.
  • X Docking station & SD card reader.
  • Affordable price : sub 70 euros.

Cons :

  • more USB ports plz
  • bottom cutout is a bit too small.
  • Lacking clearance for easy cable management
