Zalman CNPS9500 Led CPU Cooler review

When it comes to PC cooling Zalman has a great name. Being one of the first who introduced heatpipes into VGA cooling, it was an immediate hit. But when the competition started using this same technology for CPU heatsinks, Zalmanīs own CPU coolers were falling behind. Now, a bit late perhaps, we have Zalmanīs first heatpipe based CPU cooler. The Zalman CNPS9500 Led. Letīs see how it does against the best out there; the Scythe Shogun and Thermalright XP-90C are waiting…

Heatpipe + Copper = King
Heatpipe + Alum = Queen

Lower thermal output processor = ACE :)

You got the nameof 1 of the reference HS a bit wrong in the review i think. The Thermaltake XP-90C doesnt exist, it's the THERMALRIGHT.

piotke 5th November 2005 22:24

Woops, that's correct. Will be fixed this weekend.

crappy fan leads to crappy noise performance ratings, which is laughable at that price

You can't measure the GLL fan at low, not even at high it's above background noise. It's pointless running it on low.

Conclusion should say, I wouldn't recommend this HSF since there are better out.

jmke 7th November 2005 11:56

for a retail plug & play solution it's quite good value for money, at low fan setting (which you can set out of the box with the included fan controller) it's as silent as the Papst 120mm fan, and cools your CPU a lot better then default AMD/Intel cooler without the noise:)

It hasn't duelled the Freezer PRO yet =P

Don't you still have the regular Freezer for a compare?

jmke 7th November 2005 13:24

I did not do the review, and also there were quite a bit of comparable HSF tested alongside this one, don't you think? :)

VapoChill Micro, Scythe Ninja & Thermalright XP-90C, show me some other "1 heatsink review" which compares performance then more than 1 heatsink:)

look at the A64 HSF roundup to compare performance of the Freezer to the Ninja & XP-90C to be able to place the Zalman

Rutar 7th November 2005 14:56

I just wanted to have an equal compare of ready to use heatsinks as you said for an out of the box working cooler it's good.

it still has a hefty price tag for that performance, twice as much as the Freezer PRO

So if it cannot own a HSF combination for the regular users, and it cannot beat the ones for the diehard users neither in performance nor price, how can it be a good product?.

jmke 7th November 2005 14:59

it's less expensive as the "die-hard" heatsink which are $50 + cost of HQ silent fan ($10-15)

:)

Sidney 7th November 2005 15:18

Diehard users are either very opinionated (nobody could change their minds easily) or they go for what they crowds are into.:)

jmke 7th November 2005 15:25

I understand your reasoning Rutar, but it's only valid if you are into PC cooling, and at that point you don't need reviews like these to tell you what's good or not:)

the Zalman CNPS9500 is a solid CPU solution for anybody who decides to buy it. They will get their money worth, and although cheaper alternatives may exist, it's also availability which plays a large roll for the average user who's buying new gear. The amount of users who consider changing their stock CPU cooler is smaller then you think.

Most don't even know that you can change it.

Rutar 7th November 2005 18:31

the percentage of people who do know you can change it is rising sharply, that's why everybody and their mom has a heatsink in their lineup now

I need a decent review to find out what is good too, I don't want a good solution for my money I want the best (who doesn't?). Currently only the A64 roundup is giving me that information but it lacks the PRO :(.

Sidney 7th November 2005 18:59

There is no way you can replace HSF from any Dell PCs :) They are proprietary with special mounting; Acer also.

Dell + Acer sell more PC than any other brand. No schools and government agencies will replace original HSF; neither do most big Companies.

Your world is relatively small by any standard to have made comments you have.

jmke 7th November 2005 19:07

and even if you buy your PC from a local shop than the shop owner can advice you to buy another cooler if you want less noise, and he'll push his personal choice (and it will be related to price and availability, less performance and silence).

so in the end the buyer does have a 3rd party cooler, but he'll never think of changing it either. That and the fact that placing any 3rd party cooler on your CPU voids its warranty... :) (for Intel it does 100% sure, and I think it the same for boxed AMD CPU)

aaah we're a long way from seeing more advancent PC cooling becoming trendy and known to the masses

Rutar 8th November 2005 10:08

I doubt that.

a) it is much more easier to build a computer from parts than it was a few years ago

b) Dell charges a fortune compared to what the prices for the parts are RETAIL, therfore there is a price reason to build a PC instead of buying it

jmke 8th November 2005 14:54

no matter what you "doubt"

a) it hasn't changed one bit the last 10 years from a novice points of view
b) nope, a desktop+monitor can be had for a competitive price, and people who don't know anything about building PCs (which is about 99% of them out there) will prefer them over custom configured systems.

the reason why Dell/Compaq/HP/... get good sales is because people will pay more for a preconfigured system so they dont have to do research of spend time figuring things out.

it's time to wake up and smell the coffee; PC Enthusiasts are an extreme minority.
