Kool Solutions Memory Cooling Fan

Overclocking memory has come a long way, in the old days pushing more then 2.9v through your DDR sticks was considered insane; now certain manufactures are making products geared especially for high voltage (3.6+v). With the increased power comes increased heat and active memory cooling is becoming a necessity. Let´s see if this “memory cooling” Solution from Kool is any good....

I would prefer a ghetto ducttape and 120mm solution that is quiet over that.

Right now, I got the XP-120 which overlaps all my memory.

jmke 5th June 2005 03:01

I'd like you see duct-tape 120mm fan into a barebone; quality 120mm fan which has good noise/performance ratio will cost you $5.

Depends on memory stick location, Thermalright XP120 won't cover memory cooling.:)

Mind showing a picture of yours.

it's a nice thing, but i think the market is rather small for it, even with overclockers, their modules sometimes only run a few degrees hotter when oc'ed

Sidney 5th June 2005 14:58

You are correct with the market being small ;)

Sharpside 5th June 2005 15:03

Its not that hard to make it by yourself with some plexy, but it will probably cost you more than buying it.

jmke 5th June 2005 15:05

that's the whole point :)

Faiakes 6th June 2005 08:18

Ok I have read the article.

Performance: Good.:o
Price: Good:o
Noise: not so good:^D
Design:...?

2 Observations:

1) Lazyman why isn't the board shaped outwards from the point of the adhesive side?

To explain. Where the adhesive side is, the plexy (or plastic, whatever) could have been shaped outwards away from the RAM sticks, making a curve and then coming back.

Wouldn't that position the fans better above the RAM, thus increasing performance?

2) Why the (slightly) noisy fans? Aren't there any quiter fans in the market (even if more expensive) like Papst, Panaflo etc.?

Sidney 6th June 2005 14:46

1) CVMF is designed also for use with CV

http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=322

2) Noise depends on the last time one went for a hearing test, and

at 50cm they were no longer audible in the test room (room noise ~36dBA).

piotke 6th June 2005 16:20

The noise is for everybode different.

As I work on only pasive cooled systems - or almost passive (ibook, HP NC4010, barbonde with modded PSU and close to passive CPU cooling etc). I just hear everything.

SkipCox 6th June 2005 17:33

I've been using these paired 40mm fans (CVA-44) for over a year and can't hear them run unless I put my ear next to them.

I think I've tried about every possible configuration too; mounted on the ChillVent, one on the NB and one on the GPU, glued to the side of the ChillVent, some of the above and all of the above.

Even with 6 of the little buggars running, the noise was inaudible.

"2) Noise depends on the last time one went for a hearing test..."

I'm old too...but I can sure hear my psu or an 80mm running at +5vdc. Just can't hear the little 40's running.

Faiakes 6th June 2005 18:15

AS I said i did read the article.

Why not making a version independent of the Chill Vent, as I described it?

Ok forget about the fans then.

How about some funky leds options then?

Under consideration - in fact, there is another design which could be produced in short time. Needless to say, I have done the testing in prototype and it did not change the result much at all.

Rutar 7th June 2005 11:06

How doing one with 2x80mm TC3 fans from Arctic cooling?

Sidney 8th June 2005 04:36

Another cooling solution - low cost + portable + no installation require + no need for CPU fan + no case fans :drink:

There is a larger version in case it is insufficient for your need with less noise from lower RPM :)

Faiakes 8th June 2005 06:51

Link?

Where does it attach?

jmke 8th June 2005 07:36

wall outlet 110/220v :)

Faiakes 8th June 2005 12:22

 , so waht is it for?

wutske 8th June 2005 14:15

Cooling, it blows fresh air over everythin in your case.

Faiakes 8th June 2005 16:26

Side window has to be open?

jmke 8th June 2005 16:32

opening side panel increases cooling in almost all cases (pun intended)

Rutar 8th June 2005 20:00

desirable would be a setup of 2x120mm fans in the front with filter and 1x120mm + PSU fan in the back

that should keep the dust out

Faiakes 9th June 2005 07:36

Indeed, I "only" have 1x120 front, 1x92 side, 1x120 back, + PSU exhaust 80 fan.
