Corsair Nautilus 500 Overclocking Review
 

Corsair's Nautilus 500 was the darling at several electronic trade shows and compared to similarly size external units boasts specs which have them running home to momma. Today we overclock an Opteron-148 under Nautilus 500 thermal management, read on to see if it can handle the heat.

Do you recomend it for someone who is interested in overclocking but has no experience in water-cooling?

I have experience with Corsair's older external WC kit, the Hydrocool, it's very easy to install and performance beats even the most expensive air cooled heatsinks, the Nautilus is more refined, with better performance and plug and play installation features. I'm sure you won't be disappointed by its performance, yet before you make any decision take a look at other WC kits which are on the market, compare price & performance. the Nautilus is far from bad and depending on availability where you live, won't break the bank either.

Super article jmke, love the mod-able angle - is Fluid XP as trouble-free as it's made out to be?

I was considering the Nautilus 500 for a time, but I think the Alphacool 642 Kit might be a better deal (only $50 more and I really like the passive radiator). Still the portability of the nautilus is pretty damn appealing, especially if you attend LAN tournies frequently.

As previously asked, is Fluid XP a continuing factor in this equation?

Although I have switched out coolants for pre-mixes in this case I lke Corsair COOL.

I like MCT but to be honest Distilled water and a small amount of mix does better in most circumstances then pre-mixes. Wehn I tested MCT it did have an advantage at higher temps, however, if the system is optimized and the cooler is located externbally (as Natilus is) the COOL and Distilled water perform better all things being equal (meaning ambeint temps).

The 642 is also a great system and the NexXxos XP (yes it's spelled with three "x's") water block may out-perform the "swiftech block Corsair uses.

Another advanatge of the 642 CAPEW Cora is that radiator sections can be added/subtracted. Lets say you want to Overclock, placing a floor fan in front of that radiator really drops temps to just a few degrees over ambient if the system is optimized.

If your looking for ultimate modability and expandability the CAPE Cora is your best bet. You can swith out the pump, block, what have you, it's 10mm tubing, and bottom line, in my Cora 662 review which is no longer availble but basically contains the NexXXos XP, Alphacool OASE pump, and I believe 6-sections I calculated the amount of surface area which is just unreal. Eeven with the 642 you'll probably have about 10-times the total surface area of the radiator found in Nautilus 500, and while it's not forced convection itcould be.

I know someone whom is fabricating a "rack" which will mount to 6-radiator sections and feature 6x120mm fans! Now that will be an unreal cooler! he's using Papst fans most quiet 120mm. Heck you could use zip-ties and a little creativity to mount 4x120mm fans to a 642 Cora.
