Xiaomi unveils the new Redmi Note 7

48MP camera, SD660 and an affordable price tag

As promised and teased earlier, Xiaomi-s CEO, Lei Jun, has now officially unveiled the Redmi Note 7, the first smartphone that will be a part of the Redmi as a sub-brand, and the first one with the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor, all with rather impressive CNY999 ($150) price tag.

Powered by Qualcomm mid-range Snapdragon 660 SoC with two quad-core Kryo 260 clusters (2.2GHz and 1.8GHz) and Adreno 512 GPU, the Redmi Note 7 has a big 6.3-inch FHD+ 2340x1080 resolution IPS screen with a teardrop notch in the center, leaving it with a screen-to-body ratio of 84 percent. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and the phone measures at 159.21x75.21x8.1mm, weighing in at 186g.

The rest of the hardware includes 3GB, 4GB or 6GB of RAM, and 32GB or 64GB of storage, available in 3GB/32GB, 4GB/64GB, and 6GB/64GB options. It also comes with a microSD card slot which uses the second SIM slot.

The Redmi Note 7 also comes with the new 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor and it has a secondary 5-megapixel camera for AI effects. The center placed teardrop notch on the screen houses a 13-megapixel camera for selfies.

In addition to the big screen, Xiaomi equipped the Redmi Note 7 with a massive 4,000mAh non-replaceable battery, and thanks to a USB-C port it can charge up quite quickly with an optional 9V/2A charger (standard 5V/2A included), topping it up to 100 percent in around 1 hour 40 minutes.

The biggest surprise with the Redmi Note 7 is its price. Xiaomi obviously wants to put a lot of pressure on the mid-range market as the Redmi Note 7 starts at CNY 999 ($147) for the 3GB/32GB version. The 4GB/64GB version goes for CNY 1,199 ($176), while the top 6GB/64GB version costs CNY 1,399 ($206). It is available in Blue, Twilight Gold and Black color options and pre-orders are already up with availability expected on January 15th.

Apparently, there will be a more powerful Redmi Note 7 Pro version, but it is still not clear what specifications will change.
