Windows XP64 is a non standard OS, Canon says

A MAJOR MANUFACTURER of what we IT trade types call "peripherals" has described the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows as not being a standard operating system.
An INQ reader wisely asked whether Canon could supply the beautiful in theory 64-bitness to his small i350 printer, but technical support at the Japanese firm gave him a reply which may serve as a warning to others if they want to upgrade to the 64-bit version of Windows which is currently available.

Said Canon technical support to our reader: "We are not producing drivers for this OS at present as Canon have deemed XP 64 as a non standard OS designed for professional high end use.

"It will only be the top of our range designed for applications of an advanced business nature that will initially be supported on the 64 bit platform. However, Canon will monitor the take up of the new OS and respond accordingly, if necessary."

The techie concluded: "We would urge everyone upgrading to a 64 bit OS to investigate the compatibility of existing peripherals designed for 32-bit operating systems."

We would suggest that if a company as mighty as Canon is saying this, it would be very very wise to check on drivers before you make any steps you might later regret. Ask Intel and AMD tech support what they think. They are likely to give you cogent answers. And while you're at it, ask Microsoft. And HP. And everyone else.
