Windows Vista Followup Already in the Works

Codename Vienna, we can see it as early as 2009:

"We're going to look at a fundamental piece of enabling technology. Maybe its hypervisors, I don't know what it is ... Maybe it's a new user interface paradigm for consumers. It's too early for me to talk about it ... But over the next few months I think you're going to start hearing more and more

So Vista SP1 near end of 2007, leaves us with 1.5 years before new OS... hmm.. doesn't sound to plausible ?

Rutar 10th February 2007 15:04

in other words, vista is just a stopgap

Last 6 full years versus the previous six - 2000-2006 versus 1994-1999

Window 2000/XP versus Windows 3.1, Win95, Win98/SE ... there were more changes back then; and people use the OS to make a living, ie working with more software to support business.

Rutar 10th February 2007 16:49

98SE is the finally working version of 95/98 like 3.1 is the finally working version of the Windows before it

XP and ME are fubared versions of the previos OS

2K is a still the best OS M$ ever made

Seriously makes me laugh: Win2K and XP are like 95% the same software, if not more, only diff is that XP has more multimedia support, while Win2K had more network support.

Never had problems with either, and frankly, that's why I'm not eager to switch to Vista: XP is stable and good enough, and there's no needed software that requires Vista to work atm.

On a side note: the following OS had to be known to be coming, as they couldn't finish WinFS soon enough.

They will prolly pull out a new Vista with WInFS and some special features that require WinFS to work, otherwise, I won't see how they could sell it.

Ars Technica got a got write-up on why "Vienna" will be a step forward from Vista, it's all about virtualisation;

Quote:

Often called "full virtualization," this runs directly on the hardware in question and virtualizes it, providing a common hardware base to all operating environments running atop that virtualized hardware. The virtualization software is designed to handle hardware arbitration and optimize resource sharing, and that's basically it. This allows for considerably improved performance, and both AMD and Intel are working hard to promote this kind of virtualization in Pacifica and Vanderpool, respectively.

By bringing full virtualization to the desktop operating environment, Microsoft could accomplish two rather lofty goals. First, virtualization is ideal for keeping one user from ruining or dominating any particular system while giving them near-full access to that same system. This would be a boon for multi-user systems such as the PC that's shared by a family or a business. In fact, much like "profiles" can move around an Active Directory environment today, with full virtualization, a complete "system" could follow you around, provided a minimum standard of hardware is met. Even better, system maintenance and patching could be standardized in mixed-hardware environments.

"They" are being sold on every new PC and laptop; OEMs sell hell a lot more than what PC enthusiasts are buying. The money from upgrade will come 'later', and MS knows you either pay now or later. :)
