Windows Celebrates 25th Birthday
 

The world's most used operating system turned 25 years old over the weekend. Microsoft Windows 1.0 was launched on November 20, 1985.

At the time Microsoft was in the midst of a corporate evolution. It had achieved operating system dominance, with its MS-DOS being found on most IBM-compatible PCs of the day. Still, the company faced significant uncertainty. Its co-founder Paul Allen had developed Hodgkin's lymphoma and left his role at the company. And Apple, fresh off its release of its new Macintosh computer, had unveiled "desktop publishing" a thrilling new computing development which allowed customers to use a printer, software, and computer to create and print custom documents for the first time.
