Windows 8.1, and Why You Should Let Go of Windows 7

When Steve Jobs went upstage in early-April 2010 to unveil the iPad, it was expected to be the next logical step to Apple's successful miniaturization of the MacBook to the category-defining MacBook Air. It was expected to be an OS X-based handheld that ran on hardware not much different. When Jobs revealed the iPad to be an upscale of the iPhone idea, rather than a downscale of the MacBook idea, the industry was never the same again. The successful reception of the iOS on both the iPhone and iPad is what could have been the genesis of the Windows of today, which looks great on smartphones, tablets, and touch-enabled notebooks, but is hated on desktops, particularly by the PC enthusiast community. Much of that hatred is misdirected, and is a waste of time. Here's why.

>Start menu that never really left

Just no, bullshit point and the author knows it, the entire idea of metro is garbage for anything but touch screens.
Animated tiles to search for an icon is far less efficient than a LIST of what you have.

>bloat that doesn't really exist

ADS ON THE HOME SCREEN, ADVERTISMENTS

THAT IS THE DEFINITION OF BLOAT, if I wanted stocks\weather\news, that's what gadgets and my browser were for.

System settings hidden in either the metro interface or the control panel in desktop mode, with no clues as to which one it's in, and no intuitive way to find them.
Not to mention if you try to search for anything it doesn't actually work.

>the grass is greener

No. Just no. the tiles are still there, everyone has an issue with a touch based UI being launched on a ****ing desktop, just because you can change the tile sizes doesn't mean that it isn't still inherently garbage, they need to sit down and admit that they really dropped the ball with this one and that backpedalling will look better for them than staying committed (it worked for the Xbox One...).

The improvements in the new DX version are certainly not worth putting up with all of the other **** (which is still there even if you install start8).

>in conclusion

They came out with Vista and that was an absolute mess, it took a completely new version to fix it.
They've repeated themselves, the muppets.

I know plenty of people that have held on to xp until they got 3tb harddrives, I'm going to be doing much the same with 7 until 9 comes out and they fix all of the bullshit or fire whoever is responsible for the current abortion they labelled "windows".
