Windows 7 To Feature Virtual Windows XP Mode! Over a month ago, we were briefed about a secret Microsoft technology that we were told would be announced alongside the Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) and would ship in final form simultaneously with the final version of Windows 7. This technology, dubbed Windows XP Mode (XPM, formerly Virtual Windows XP or Virtual XP, VXP), dramatically changes the compatibility story for Windows 7 and, we believe, has serious implications for Windows development going forward. Here's what's happening. XPM is built on the next generation Microsoft Virtual PC 7 product line, which requires processor-based virtualization support (Intel and AMD) to be present and enabled on the underlying PC, much like Hyper-V, Microsoft's server-side virtualization platform. However, XPM is not Hyper-V for the client. It is instead a host-based virtualization solution like Virtual PC; the hardware assistance requirement suggests this will be the logical conclusion of this product line from a technological standpoint. That is, we fully expect future client versions of Windows to include a Hyper-V-based hypervisor. http://community.winsupersite.com/bl...windows-7.aspx |
It looks a bit like the Virtualbox seamless mode, but then probably a lot better :D (read: more advanced and integrated with windows) |
Nice. They needed something exactly like this in order to finally pull people away from XP let alone businesses. |
let's just wait and see IF it works ;) VM doesn't always reflect real hardware |
I'm also a bit worried about the memory usage... running a virtual xp environment in the background is probably not the most lightweight solution (but a great move from microsoft like Kougar said). |
memory usage is least of my concern ;) |
Some people care, I only have 2Gb in my laptop ... not enough to run a virtualised XP environment and working on linux at the same time :( . |
you can easily upgrade to 4gb+ for less than a large meal;) |
Where can I get this free upgrade then ? :) |
where did I write free? a free meal doesn't exist €20 per 2gb is far from expensive:) http://www.alternate.be/html/product...l?artno=IBNEBB or one stick of 4gb for €50 http://www.alternate.be/html/product...l?artno=ICNE2M I did say LARGE meal! |
$36 for 2 x 2GB DDR2-667 SODIMM kit: Link |
unavailable to us;) |
[OffTopic]A meal that costs you 50 will never be LARGE, you'll get a "large" plate with a few pieces of food on it ;) :D [/OffTopic] |
... order KFC for €50 and let me know how large you'll plate will be:p |
I don't have to pay for my meals :D . Laptop memory sure did become cheap :) |
