Toshiba launches new range of SSDs for Enterprise applications

New drives feature NAND flash with wide interfaces support along with high capacities

21 August, 2012, Dusseldorf – Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE), Storage Products Division, today announced a major expansion of its PX-Series enterprise Solid State Drive (eSSD) product range with three new models aimed at a broad range of enterprise applications. The PX-Series reflects Toshiba’s continued storage innovation and coincides with the company’s celebration of its 25th anniversary as the inventor of NAND flash technology. Each model is optimised for its target segment with NAND flash processes, capacity and interface support.

The PX02SM series is Toshiba’s first eSSD to utilise cost-effective 24nm eMLC (enterprise multi-level cell) NAND technology, with capacities of 200/400/800GB[1] and 1.6TB, and is also its first with a dual-port 12Gb/sec SAS interface. With a form-factor equivalent to industry-standard 2.5inch (6.4 cm) HDDs, the PX02SM series incorporates additional capabilities that enhance performance as well as reliability, including Toshiba’s proprietary Quadruple Swing-By Code (QSBC) for improved error correction compared to competing solid-state memory technologies and power loss protection technologies.

The PX02AM series is optimised for entry-to-mid-level server and storage applications requiring balance, reliability, capacity and endurance and features 24nm eMLC NAND flash in capacities of 100, 200 and 400GB, all with a 6Gb/s SATA (Serial ATA) interface. With a slim 7mm 2.5inch industry-standard form-factor, all models offer power-loss protection.

The PX03AN series is targeted at entry-level server applications and is Toshiba’s first eSSD family using 19nm cMLC (consumer multi-level cell) NAND flash, in capacities of 55, 120, 240 and 480 GB.

Toshiba’s unique integrated SSD design and manufacturing capability ensures that key components of the SSD, including NAND flash, are designed by Toshiba leveraging Toshiba’s vertical integration and leadership strengths in the growing SSD market. Component and design commonality also reduces qualification time for Toshiba customers and reflects Toshiba’s partner-driven approach to SSD design and manufacturing.

“As SSDs continue broaden their reach into enterprise applications, from databases to decision support systems, our customers are looking to an equally broad set of SSD solutions,” said Martin Larsson, vice president, Toshiba Electronics Europe. “Today’s announcement showcases how Toshiba is providing our partners with the ability to deliver the best storage solutions for every enterprise need.”

The PX02SM 200, 400 and 800GB models will start shipping for select projects in October, with the 1.6 TB model shipping later in the fourth quarter of 2012. The PX02AM series of value-line eSSDs and the PX03AN series of entry-level eSSDs will both commence shipments end this year.
