dual core will greatly help you in the type of multitasking you describe. i regularly convert dvd's into divx format and continue several other tasks using a dual core amd X2 and my rig keeps chugging away with no slowdown. prior to moving to the 4600+, i had a single core 4000+ which bogged down during multitasking. my son is quite happy with my "old" 4000+ as it kicks butt in gaming
