Sitecom IPv6 ready

Sitecom launches new firmware to equip
routers and modem routers with IPv6 support.

Rotterdam (The Netherlands), May 2013 - The Sitecom X-series 3.0 routers and modem routers are compatible with IPv6. The new firmware is launched in order to prepare Sitecom solutions for the internet of the future. IPv6, Internet Protocol version 6 in full, is the new version of the system that makes connecting to the internet possible on devices such as desktop PCs, notebooks, tablets and smartphones. The most important reason for the new protocol is the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses. With the number of devices that are connected to the internet continuing to grow, IPv6 support is essential. To be able to offer full IPv6 support in all countries and with all internet service providers, the Sitecom (modem) routers will support the following IPv6 protocols after the new firmware has been implemented: Native, DS-lite, 6rd and PPPoX (PPPoA and PPPoE). Sitecom has been collaborating intensively with the IPv6 Foundation Netherlands for the implementation of IPv6. "The IPv6 Foundation (StIpv6) has set up an IPv6 test lab at the request of Sitecom, where all of the current technologies for IPv6 connections are supported in exactly the same way as internet service providers supply them", according to Sander Steffann, board member of the IPv6 Foundation. "This will allow Sitecom to test all products with native IPv6 as well as transition mechanisms such as 6rd and DS-Lite".

A larger number of available IP addresses is not the only advantage of IPv6. The scarcity of IPv4 addresses means that the majority of home networks use one IP address for the internet; the address that is assigned to the router and that is linked to the internet service provider. With IPv6, each device is given its own IP address. Because of this, applications such as file sharing, online gaming and P2P applications are made simpler; end users no longer have to mess around with complex router settings. Moreover, IPv6 offers better security due to the fact that every IPv6 package is sent encrypted.

The new firmware is available now and will be offered automatically to users in the web browser via Sitecom's Automatic Firmware Update. Sitecom makes it easy!
