SiS to start volume shipments of its PCIe-enabled Intel P4 chipsets this month

Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) will start volume shipments of its Intel P4 PCIe-enabled core-logic chipsets, the SiS649 and SiS656, in the second half of December, according to the company.

The discrete SiS649 and SiS656 northbridge chips support x16 PCIe lanes, enabling front-side bus (FSB) speeds of up to 800MHz. In the case of the SiS649, there is support for up to 2GB of memory. The SiS656 supports up to 4GB of memory.

Both AGP and PCIe external graphics are supported, with up to 4Gbytes/sec of graphics bandwidth for PCIe cards.

However, the SiS649 part features a single-channel DDR2-533/DDR-400 memory controller, while the SiS 656 features a dual-channel controller and ECC memory support.

Both parts will be used with the SiS965 southbridge I/O controller. The SiS965 has support for two PCIe x1 lanes, integrated RAID and Gigabit Ethernet. This southbridge also supports four SATA ports.

SiS will also begin volume production of its SiS756 discrete PCIe core-logic chipset for the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) K8 platform this month, with the integrated part, the SiS761FX, arriving in the second quarter of 2005.
