Seagate's upcoming 3TB drives will need new motherboards?
 

2.1 TB of storage ought to be enough for anybody. At least, that's what IBM and Microsoft must have been thinking when they set the maximum supported size drive of the venerable Logical Block Addressing (LBA) standard that's now embedded in motherboards, RAID drivers and firmware, and operating systems across all segments of the PC industry. So when Seagate confirmed longstanding rumors that the drivemaker is prepping a 3TB drive for the end of the year, it also had to give a number of caveats along with the news.

Yeah, it should be interesting to see what happens. Shame XP won't be able to support these bad boys. :(

XP doesn't support a lot of things, such as 4KB sector aligned hard drives.

But then again, XP is a very old OS, you can't expect Microsoft to keep supporting and updating it. It's a great OS for older hardware, but it's just not the right thing for new hardware.

in fact.. XP runs faster on newer hardware than newer OSes from Microsoft... ;)

So does Office 97, but I sure wouldn't use it for that reason... :D

As far as "newer hardware" goes, XP is a poor choice for Core i7 systems, it isn't HT aware (doesn't distinguish between logical/physical cores) and can't properly schedule tasks across 8-12 threads as well as 7. If you run Core i7's or Gulftown (Or AMD's Thuban X6) then Windows 7 will give you better performance for heavy workloads that fully load the system.

Office 97 has less functionality than 2000/2003/2007 and is very dated compared to Outlook 2010.
Xp however has all the functionality of Vista/7 if you exclude DX11 and that uber multicore hoxpoxs

Single core computer are harder to find nowadays, so this uber multicore hoxpoxs is a great argument to stop using XP ...

XP works perfectly fine with dual cores and dual cores with HT
like... Core i5... the next gen mainstream CPU.

Of course it works, but it can be better.
It's like cars, a '92 Ford Fiesta works fine; it has 4 cilinders with a total capacity of 1100cc ... yet any 2010 1100cc car is faster, quieter and more economical because it uses improved technologies?
So why would you want to place the body of '92 Fiesta on a '10 Ford Fiesta ? It'll only make the car slower because of it's lack of a proper airflow and because of the older, heavier materials used.
