Sapphire Brings GDDR4 back to Radeon 4000 Series
 

Yesterday Sapphire quietly launched Sapphire HD 4670 GDDR4. This is the first product in the Radeon 4000 series to make use of GDDR4. GDDR4 was a hit (X1950 XTX) & miss (2900 XT) for ATI in the past which led them to relying solely on GDDR3 & GDDR5 for the Radeon HD 4000 series. However Add-In-Board (AIB) partners like Sapphire can make custom designs which led to the culmination of this product.

There is another product Sapphire has up it's sleeve; Sapphire HD 4830 GDDR4. Yes, thats 0.8ns (at 1.8V) which results in an effective clock rate of 1.25GHz compared to the 900MHz on the 4830 GDDR3. That gives an astounding 80GB/sec memory bandwidth at 1.25GHz. A more interesting product would have been a 4850 to make use use of the extra available bandwidth. The memory modules used are provided by Hynix (H5FS Series). Expect a price tag of $90 and an release date in the upcoming weeks.
