Not heat pipes...
 
Those are spring clips and not heat pipes...

"We didn't want to glue the chips because we could have problems when removing the heat sinks, and decided to fix them with clips. The principle of their operation is based on the metal memory effect: after putting it into a certain shape by bending and unbending it within certain limits the metallic part tends to return to the original state (before unbending). We used a copper wire 2 mm in diameter as a clip; its ends press down the heatsinks mounted onto the memory on both sides. Have a look at the result:"
