Sam (TeamOCX) breaks 8min barrier in SuperPi 32M

More overclocking news! A Latvian overclocker named Sam/Tapakah, accompanied by MrLobber, managed to break the SuperPi 32M record and be the first to do it in less than 8 minutes!

Thanks to a lot of system tweaking, he only needed an 5770MHz E8500 to do the job. Used cooling system is liquid nitrogen, obviously. Word on the street goes that, equipped with an E8600, he'll be breaking other barriers soon!

while it's true that the E8600 will be binned higher than E8500, it doesn't necessarily mean it will overclock higher too ;)

The main issue with the E8400 and E8500 are the FSB speeds. Not much DDR3 motherboards can hit high FSB speeds. As the E8600 is equiped with a multiplier of 10, benching at 6GHz (600x10), will be easy.

are there plans for an extreme dual core Wolfdale ala X series from before? That would sell:)

Massman 11th July 2008 20:06

Multiplier of 10 is enough, no need for an Extreme version.

not as easy as MP change without FSB hassle :)

Physical frequency limit of Wolfdale will be around 6.5-6.6G, meaning that with MP of 10, you'll be able to hit the limit of the cpu sooner than you'll hit the limit of the FSB :)

I'm talking about the easiness of OC which the X series really did, since the X6800 was the most expensive at launch, OCing with MP didn't rob any sales ;)

Okay, it would be easier in theory, however, if you buy a trusted oc-motherboard, it'll do 550FSB for sure. I'd like to see the person who needs an unlocked MP to find the limits of their cpu on air cooling. 550x10 is not doable, let alone 550x11 and higher.

I'm talking about those who want the fastest out there with no hassle. No guess work, no tinkering. Just increase MP until bluescreen, lower MP. Done :)

those people have the $$ dual core > quad core Mhz wise, and single threaded apps will go faster on that system.
