RAM disk add-in card - Gigabyte's fast data storage Next, a PCI card from Gigabyte that acts as a SATA hard drive - but using DDR RAM for amazingly fast access. Coming in a configuration up to 4GB, this means super-fast data storage. http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/05...abyte_ramdisk/ |
now this is interesting! although 4gb is on the small side |
Could be interesting, if it doesn't cost too much, then you'll only have to find some very cheap ddr sticks |
last time I saw that it was with SD ram and it cost 500$ for the card alone. looks good though. |
If it is cheap and even then... 4 GB is not enough to store WinXP and a big game like Doom3 or HL2. |
Ooooops. Aparently you can have 2 of them in RAID, now this is promising. If 2 of them are cheaper than the 74GB Raptor I will buy them. |
Alright ! Anandtech reports: http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/...spx?i=2431&p=5 that it will cost ~$50 US. Excellent news, Smithers!:excellent 2 of these are going to be my next system drive (Until MRAM comes that is...) |
Hmmm, come to think of it I am going to stick with the Raptor for the time being. 16 Hours of battery time is simply not enough. 24 hours would be a good start. But then again what happens if want to go away for the weekend? You would either have to leave the PC running or reinstall windows on monday! If Gigabyte had played it smart and since this is a PCI card, they could have provided a special PC power cable with a junction coming off it right before the PSU leaving at least 2 plugs available so that with an additional power cable leading to the back of the PCI, power would be provided even if the PC wasn't turned on! That in combination with an average UPS would in effect compensate for the volatile nature of the memory. All that until MRAM becomes available of course! We came close Smithers :excellent , nevermind, next time:grin: |

you could also use it as a ramdisk, temp folder, browser cache, video-editing cache,... no problems with data loss |
sure, but being able to place your OS on a ramdrive will make your whole OS fly 4gb is not big enough for video-editing btw |
I don't think you can find DDR 200 in 1GB sticks nowadays anyway. It's just not worth it. 1) It ought to be SATA-II, so it could make use of faster RAM. 2) It ought to have direct mains power and a UPS plug too, so that one's operating system could be stored there. |
