Researchers at the University of Exeter have found that discussion forums on the internet are positively good for your health.

Even though the last few years have been dominated by Twitter and Facebook, forums are still used by 10 percent of people in the UK and as much as 20 percent of people in the USA, the researchers found.

And they believe one of the reasons that they remain popular is because people can be anonymous when they post their ideas.

Dr Louise Pendry, the lead author of the survey, said forums are a source of great support, particularly so for those who want information about conditions – such as depression – which are stigmatised.

The researchers approached people and classified them into two groups – those that discussed mental health and the like – and those with interests hobbies and lifestyles.
