NVIDIA drops GTX 280 / GTX 260 prices... again

We've been on the phone to Nvidia this morning and have word on price drops for the latest Nvidia graphics cards: GeForce GTX 280, 260 and 9800 GTX+. The exact pricing for us (or you) Europeans and our neighbours in the States is:

* The GeForce GTX 280 drops to $449 or 359 Euros
* GeForce GTX 260 drops to $299 or 239 Euros
* GeForce 9800 GTX+ will come in at $199 or 169 Euro

The GeForce GTX 260 should now make the competition with the Radeon HD 4870 more fierce, as will the price drops for GeForce 9800 GTX+ with the Radeon HD 4850.

What an evolution, launched at prices close to €600 now available less than one month later at €350 (cheapest in EU). Still too expensive? What do you think.

doable price. But ati still seems to have better price/performance/value balance.

for sure, at €220-230 the HD4870 is plenty fast at resolutions below 1920x1200; so any 20"~22" owner at 16x0x1xx0 (1680x1050/1600x1200) will get playable framerates at native resolution. Only those with 1920x1200 or higher will notice a difference with the GTX 280.

Are you serious? ATI completely owns the best price/performance just now.

Two HD 4850's cost $50 less than a GTX 280 and offered significantly better performance than the GTX 280 in every single game FiringSquad tested.

HD 4850 Xfire even beats 9800GTX "XXX" SLI in most TTR benches.

quote me where I'm talking about price/performance my friend ;)
multi-GPU with microstuttering and none guaranteed performance boost is always a gamble. So going single GPU the HD4870 is an excellent choice for anything below 1920x1200. At 1920x1200 you might be better of with the GTX 280 if you have the money.

that's all I said, nothing more, nothing less.

Future-proof wise, heat wise, power usage wise, single GPU >>>>> multi-GPU. Most of the time also price wise, but HD4800 is exception to the rule thanks to high NVIDIA prices:)
