I've not just heard about, but seen users breaking heatpipes before, either with a errant screwdriver or when trying to force the heatsink to fit in a board with clearance issues.

WC is fairly safe if done properly... never lost a single piece of hardware... yet. :D

Those same people probable brush their teeth with thermal paste...
Don't DIY if you can't handle a screwdriver ;)
