Default Intel starts to ship 64-bit Xeons

Staff, 07.22.04, 4:10 PM ET

Intel has begun shipping 64-bit Xeon processors for workstations.

The company says the new chip will boost performance by up to 30% over previous generation Xeon processors. It will be used in systems that handle such functions as financial and scientific data modeling, digital filmmaking and design automation.

The chip is built on 90-nanometer manufacturing process.

The new Intel Xeon processors are available now at speeds ranging from 2.80 to 3.60 GHz. The 3.60 GHz processor is available in limited quantities as production ramps through the third quarter.

In quantities of 1,000 the new 3.60 GHz chip costs $851 while the 2.8 Ghz chips costs $209. Please visit http://purchasing.com for more information.
