Default Intel's supply shortage is AMD's gain

TAIWANESE MOTHERBOARD makers say a massive shortage of Intel's entry-level G31 IGP chipsets, coupled with AMD's single socket strategy versus Chipzilla's three (technically four) socket strategy, will result in major boxed CPU market share gains for the littler chipper in the second half of 2009.

According to DigiTimes, Intel's G31 chipset makes up 50 per cent of the firm's total channel shipments at present, with the level of supply coming nowhere near the rampant demand. Dodgy says Intel is keeping supply low on purpose, in order to speed up transition to its 4-series chipsets, but the strategy may well backfire.

Of course both Intel and AMD have their own quirky ways of viewing market share, but if our sources are correct, AMD should be left holding about 30 to 35 per cent in the boxed CPU channel market by the end of Q309.
