Intel prices up Presler as top end desktop chips change

CHIP FIRM Intel has told its motherboard partners to prepare for the introduction of Pentium 4 and Pentium 4 Extreme CPU in January 2006, and priced up the processors.
Presler is the long awaited Intel shrink of the die to 65 nanometres from 90, and including VT virtualisation tech, additional cache, and EIST.

The Pentium 4 Extreme Presler, numbered 955 and clocking at 3.46GHz with 2X2MB cache and a 1066MHz bus will cost $999, so that's intended to displace the 90 nano Extreme Edition chips which currently cost the same.

The Pentium 4 introductions will be the 950 ($635), the 940 ($420), the 930 ($315), and the 920 ($240). These clock at 3.4GHz, 3.2GHz, 3GHz and 2GHz respectively. They have 800MHz buses, use the LGA775 socket, and each has 2X2MB caches too.

That means additional price changes on existing Pentium 4 processors. Before the January pricing, intended to show the 65 nano chips displace the 90 nano chips, there will be a price adjustment in mid November with the introduction of a 672, 3.8GHz 2MB cache chip costing $600 or so. Intel will alsoo introduce the 662, a 3.6GHz chip at $400.

In January, the new 65 nanometre Pentium 4 lamps numbered the 661, the 651, the 641 and the 631 will be priced up at $400, $270, $220 and $180 respectively.

The latest roadmaps we've seen confirm the existence of an Intel own motherboard called Grant County 2, slated for Q1 of next year and we believe based on an ATI chipset with integrated PCI Express graphics. µ
