Default Intel delays TV chip

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - Intel has delayed the release of a chip used in projection televisions, according to a published report Monday.

The company's liquid crystal on silicon chip, or LCos, was to have been released by the end of 2004. Intel now says it is trying to more clearly differentiate the chip from rival technologies, the Associated Press reported Monday.

Intel also wants to spend more time to make the TV picture derived from the chip a clearer one, the AP said.

The delay follows three other delays this year.

In July, the company said it would not deliver a 4 GHz version of its Pentium 4 processor until the first quarter, dashing expectations that the chip would be ready in the fourth quarter.

Earlier in the year, Intel recalled some of its Grantsdale chipsets and it delayed a version of its Pentium M, known previously as Dothan.

At the time of the Pentium 4 delay, Chief Executive Craig Barrett issued a staff-wide e-mail week challenging his employees to focus on improving execution. He stated there should be "no doubt about the need to improve our performance." See full story.
