Intel banks on new architecture

But while it was relatively easy to double the clock speed from 100 megahertz to 200 megahertz and then 200 to 400 or even 600, once the speed got to around 3 gigahertz doubling that to 6 gigahertz was not that simple. In fact the chip makers are reluctant to even increase the speed to 4 gigahertz.

At these speeds all sorts of problems arise which affect everything from timing, to heat dissipation to catastrophic failure due to the laws of physics. So along comes dual core........

In fact it was actually AMD (AMD) that first proposed the dual core architecture. Intel said to itself, "We can do that!" and ran away with the idea........

Exactly what new kinds of applications develop out of new these high performance desktop computers remains to be seen. Hopefully it will be something more meaningful than Intel's remark that with dual core you can "play a game while recording multiple TV shows." We'd better see something more important than that.
