IBM introduces dual-core PowerPC 970 chip

IBM YESTERDAY introduced a 64-bit, dual-core version of its PowerPC 970 (G5) processor at a shindig in Japan.
IBM said the chip - the 970MP - will clock at speeds from between 1.4 to 2.5GHz. and is aimed at "clients who desire a low-cost, high performance, 64-bit, symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) capable system in a small package."

The fancy chippery is likely to be slipped into a Power Mac G5 before long and could well be the last blast IBM has on an Apple platform before all Macs have Intel inside them.

IBM says that each of the two 64-bit PowerPC 970MP cores has its own dedicated 1MB L2 cache, resulting in performance more than double that of the PowerPC 970FX.

And should you be doing nothing more than sending a few emails and reading the processor-friendly INQ, you could shut down one of the cores, placing it a 'doze' state and just use one.

The big company also announced low-power PowerPC 970FX chips that chew up 13W at 1.4 GHz and 16W at 1.6GHz under typical workloads.

IBM showed off its chippery at the Power Everywhere Forum 2005 in Japan, yesterday. µ
