Default HP releases new Itanium based system

Two weeks after a judge told HP's rival Oracle to build systems around Intel's Itanium, the maker of expensive printer ink has released a new N2100 system based on the chip.

HP has announced that it is expanding its line of Itanium-based NonStop servers with a new system. The NS2100 is targeted at smaller companies and emerging markets.

The system gives these SMBs the high availability that larger NonStop servers offer enterprises. They will cost about $75,000.

Randy Meyer, director of product management, strategy and technology for HP's NonStop Enterprise Division said that the server was not a general-purpose replacement for all workloads or industries.

However, the NS2100 allows customers to have a fault-tolerant system that is 100 percent NonStop to accommodate their workloads, at a lower price.

HP is by far the largest user of Itanium chips, having standardised its high end systems including NonStop and Integrity servers on the controversial platform.

The NS2100 uses Chipzilla's Itanium 9300 Series processors but is still categorised as an entry-class server, Meyer said.
