Thomas Martel, a 28 year old guy in Denver is also a big guy. He’s so big he has trouble using the latest in technology because his hands can’t manipulate those ever shrinking gadgets.

“From my old Treo, to my Blackberry, to this new iPhone, I had a hard time hitting the right buttons, and I always lost those little styluses,” explains Martel.

whittling.jpgSo what did he do? The sensible thing of course, he had his thumbs surgically altered in a process called ‘whittling’ which is designed to reduce the size of the digits and simultaneously bring shivers to my spine.

“Sure, the procedure was expensive, but when I think of all the time I save by being able to use modern handhelds so much faster, I really think the surgery will pay for itself in ten to fifteen years. And what it’s saving me in frustration - that’s priceless.”

Martel went through a procedure in which a small incision was made into both his thumbs, the bones were shaved down and the muscles and his fingernails were altered.

In a statement seemingly designed to bring chills to the spines of ordinary workers everywhere, Dr. Robert Fox Spars said “We’re turning plastic surgery from something that people use in service of vanity, to a real tool for improving workplace efficiency.”

Martel is enjoying his smaller thumbs, but said “opening spaghetti sauce jars has been a problem. That was a big surprise.”
