Google drops driverless car development without steering wheels Fleet with human controls coming next year According to people familiar with Alphabet Inc.’s plans, Google has recently dropped its plans to develop a modern yet controversial self-driving vehicle without manual control mechanisms, including a steering wheel or brakes. Instead, the company is now putting safety at the forefront of its development approach and will introduce a fleet of Uber-like “robo-taxi” vehicle fleet still fully equipped with traditional driving features for human beings.
