Foxconn bets the farm on Firefox

It seems that electronics manufacturer Foxconn is putting shedloads of effort in getting Mozilla's Firefox OS up and running.

The company, more famous for its staff trying to quit the company via the roof, plans to hire up to 3,000 people in Taiwan with expertise in HTML5 and cloud computing.

Foxconn announced that it was going to hire between 2,000 and 3,000 people in order to bolster its research into the software. It wants software engineers with skills in HTML5 operating systems, HTML5 apps, and cloud computing.

The announcement followed the news that it had partnered with Mozilla on its still-fledgling HTML5-based operating system, called Firefox OS.

Foxconn said that it wants to provide its customers with an alternative operating system in the rapidly expanding mobile device arena.

It said that it is developing more than five devices running the Firefox OS for its customers. It intends to design Firefox OS reference models that will cover smartphones, tablets, laptops and TVs.

According to IT World, Mozilla is having a job trying to attract developers to its Firefox OS ecosystem. The Firefox marketplace only has 1,000 apps.
