HTPCnews along with many of the other main review sites on the net was invited to Nvidia's Editors Day where they showed off their new 7800GTX video card. This is our take on the new technology that comes with this new era of video cards, how it will affect the gaming industry as well as the HTPC industry. We cover a good deal of parts dealing with Custom resolutions and the need to no longer use an application like Powerstrip with the new 75 series Forceware drivers. Nvidia didn't stop there, they even built in 10ft Gui's for Microsoft's Media Center 2005 to control resolutions of their cards... Also included are benchmarks on how well the 7800GTX performed on our test bench while running full HDTV resolutions on a few of the latest games.

We just released the first bench we made on GeForce 7800GTX in standard mode and FSAA 4x. Just look at FSAA one, it’s quite interesting ;)

Looking back, the video card race between NVIDIA and ATI has usually meant a new chip once a year and a refresh once every six or so months. Usually the refresh has been the same chip with some minor tweaks and increased clock speeds when they’ve gotten better yields out of the design over time. Those of you who follow the industry however might have noticed that since NVIDIA released the first GeForce 6 cards in spring 2004 there haven’t been any refresh-products coming out. Instead NVIDIA choose to release SLI-support on their motherboards. It is easy thus to think that the new GeForce 7 chips are nothing more than a refresh product. As the name suggests though this isn’t the case. The GeForce 7 is a new chip with improvements beyond mere increased clockspeed.

Inevitably, high performance comes with a price. A price of US$599 to be exact. This is no short amount of change. At $599, the GeForce 7800 GTX is for the gamer with lots of cash who wants the best features and performance now. For those of you that have worked hard and long enough to afford two 7800 GTX for SLI; you will be experiencing immersive gaming environments that will take your breath away.

Obviously, it is up to you to decide what you need and what you can afford. If you want the best gaming video card on the market, the GeForce 7800 GTX is it right now. You may be wondering about cheaper versions of the GeForce 7800 series. Currently, NVIDIA is only announcing the GeForce 7800 GTX as their flagship model. You can pretty much assume that there will be lesser versions sold for less money down the line, each one being slower than the 7800 GTX of course. AGP versions of the 7800 family, if any, have not been discussed either.

The most important feature about this entire launch, in our opinion, is the instant availability of GeForce 7800 GTX video cards. These video cards are literally available today and there is no waiting. If you want the absolute best gaming experience your computer can provide today, you will need to make sure that a GeForce 7800 GTX is tucked inside.

We do commend NVIDIA for getting product out there before launching it. But now we move on to the least pleasant side of this launch: price. The GeForce 7800 GTX will cost a solid $600. Of course, we do expect retailers to charge a premium for the early adopters. Prices we are seeing at launch are on the order of $650. This means those who want to build an SLI system based on the GeForce 7800 GTX will be paying between $1200 and $1300 just for the graphics component of their system.
