ENERMAX 1KW PSU fails to power 8800 GT

Local forum member Faiakes ran into some problems when he bought a new 8800 GT, replacing his older overclocked 8800 GTS Video card. It seems his multi rail Enermax 1KW PSU is unable to provide enough juice to power his system with the new 8800 GT inside.

That PSU has 5 12v rails... give me a single rail anyday :)

Faiakes 13th February 2008 11:15

It's been a very frustrating affair.

Now I have to spend my money RMAing the heavy PSU back to Enermax UK. We'll see if the issue gets resolved by providing a new Galaxy DXX (I doubt).

PSU with 5x12V rails will work too, if properly designed that is.

The downside, I think it makes a PSU just more complex then a single rail PSU with propper decoupling, allthough that the latter could be very dangerous if impropperly manufactured.

Enermax have informed me that they have sent a replacement.

I'll have it tomorrow. I'll test it right away and let you know.

jmke 19th February 2008 10:10

same model, or upgrade?

Faiakes 19th February 2008 10:18

I think the same, as there is no upgrade from the Galaxy DXX.

Faiakes 20th February 2008 19:00

Today I got the Enermax PSU back.
Connected everything, pushed the button...no luck.
Exactly the same situation.

I did notice, however, something flashing at the back of the Striker. This just made my day. I get the CPU INIT error...

if you don't know what it is, check this thread.

It would appear that the Striker might have had more to do with the issue than previously thought.

what a mess :/

Faiakes 20th February 2008 19:49

Mess doesn't even begin to describe it.

After trying all the prescribed remedies for a couple of hours I gave up. I'm now RMAing the board.

There is a reason I never have and never will own a Nvidia chipset. That is just bull, I'm sorry.

Nvidia chipsets have been a nightmare for a minority of their users, and still continue to be with 780i.

My DFI nF4 was rock solid. But those days are long gone it seems.

What pisses me off is the £175 I paid NOT to have these kind of problems.

The cheapest boards often have the least problems because they are simpler. Same goes for cars.

Faiakes 21st February 2008 22:54

I contacted Enermax UK about how they tested it. They said they used their testing equipment but not an actual 8800GT.

They claim they have no reason to test it with an 8800GT (which sounds suspicious to me).
Antway, since the Striker came up with the infamous CPU INIT error, the blame has shifted to the motherboard for the time being.
I have done an RMA and once I get a replacement back we'll see if the Galaxy DXX was to blame or not.

Faiakes 6th March 2008 22:41

I got the MSI P7N Platinum, plugged it all in and the card works.

So it would seem that it was the bad Striker that caused the problem, not the Galaxy DXX.

(P.S. I now have to return the XpertVision 8800GT as it operates with the fas permanently stuck at 100% as it would appears it has no thermal sensors!!!)
