Enable "Very High" IQ setting in Crysis under XP/DX9

Go to "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis SP Demo\Game\Config\CVarGroups" then open the .cfg and make some alterations. For convenience sake we have included a preconfigured .cfg which enables Very High setting (more bump mapping enabled and better lightening).

You can get the CFG here: http://www.megaupload.com/fr/?d=PPVQWWZ3
To see difference between Very High & High check the site above ^^
To see DX9 vs DX10 IQ check http://webpages.charter.net/bliss/

It seems that the DX10 superior graphics are commercial more than technical, as expected, XP/DX9 can give you the same IQ for Crysis under DX10. The benchmark Very High vs High under DX9 does show a large decrease in performance (31 -> 16 avg FPS).

that opens up a whole new area of DX10 vs 9 benchmarks

from that thread, with the cfg "tweaks" all was set to Very High on DX9/XP and then compared to Very High under Vista.

here's Very high IQ setting under Vista:

and this is Very High "tweaked" IQ setting under XP:

what difference?

DX10 is TOTALLY busted

I finally got my FPS numbers for DX10 vs hack:

18.3 vs 24.4

16.1 vs 22.8

15.2 vs 19.5

tried it out, performance drop is quite huge, but as you can see also, under Vista there are a few extra shader effects, and lower performance, screenshots don't show any difference though.

What is sure though is that the statement NVIDIA uttered last year stating that 8800 GTX makes games CPU dependent is completely wrong as Crysis doesn't even use 100% of the CPU on a dual core system, both cores are at 70-80%

frame rates are borderline nauseating, first screen shows CPU usage on E6400 @ 2.8Ghz, the others at different moments in the demo, smoke effects are awesome, explosion effects too, water is very very pretty, textures are high res too; check it out, without AA, enabled that will make it a slideshow I'm afraid;)

So for those of you that have played the demo, what is the minimum FPS before jerkiness or lag becomes apparent? 40 maybe?

jmke 30th October 2007 08:15

<20FPS, anything above that, even with motion blur doesn't bother me, and the game remains enjoyable. Of course 40FPS is better, but not as big a difference as you'd think
