Elpida delivers DDR3 SDRAM memory modules to Intel

Despite most observers believing that DDR2 will only rise to the mainstream memory in 2006, major memory makers are all gearing up for the launch of DDR3 chips. Japan-based Elpida Memory announced that it has recently started shipping DDR3 DIMM samples to Intel, while Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology have announced prototypes.

After announcing the development of DDR3 chips in August, Elpida announced on November 14 that it has started shipping 512MB and 1GB DDR3 DIMMs to Intel and the company stressed that this new generation chip should help deliver twice the system performance of DDR2 architecture.

Samsung was the leader among industry players when it introduced its 512Mbit DDR3 chip prototype in February of this year, while Germany-based Infineon Technologies also announced its 512Mbit DDR3 chips during June. However, Samsung has not revealed much more since then and Infineon stated that it will focus on developing higher density DDR3 chips.

Hynix Semiconductor showcased its DDR3 at the Intel developer forum in August, according to a TG Daily report and US-based Micron Technology was quoted by Info World as saying that it is also developing DDR3 chips.

IDC predicts that the first DDR3 DRAMs will be sold in 2006 and that the chip will represent 65% of the entire DRAM market in 2009.
