Dell's Quest deal goes through
 

Tinman Michael Dell has formally announced that he is buying Quest Software for US$2.4 billion.

The announcement follows weeks of rumour, speculation and leaks over Michael's interest in the infrastructure software vendor.

The deal is expected to close later this year after all the regulators have had a snuffle.

Quest owns the Toad database management toolset, Quest One Identity management software, and the SonicWALL and Secureworks products.

A press release said that all these products play nicely with Dell's portfolio.

This is the latest software company to be bought by Dell since he formed his new software division.

That division, which is headed by former CA Technologies CEO John Swainson is supposed to improve Dell's chances as a services company.

The wheeling and dealing started in March, when Quest announced it was going private through a $2 billion stock buyback along with private equity firm Insight Venture Partners. It made it known that it was open to better offers.

That was when Dell which wants to become a rival of IBM, Hewlett-Packard, BMC and CA, made its move.
