Default Dell launches i915, i925 systems

Dell has launched a series of desktops based on Intel's new i915 and i925 chipset, better known as 'Grantsdale' and 'Alderwood', respectively.

The i925X forms the basis of the Dell Dimension 8400 and XPS desktops. Both are offered with a choice of Pentium 4 processors. The XPS can be configured with a 3.6GHz P4 560 or a 3.4GHz P4 Extreme Edition. Either can be selected for the 8400, which is also offered with the 3.4MHz P4 550.

Both machines offer 533MHz DDR 2 SDRAM in a dual-channel configuration, up to 1200GB of Serial ATA storage with Intel's 'same disks, different RAIDs' Matrix Storage Technology (three 400GB drives on the XPS or two on the 8400), Gigabit Ethernet and a 256MB ATI Radeon X800 XT PCI Express graphics card. Both machines are offered with a variety of optical storage options.

The Dimension 4700 is based on the i915G, the intgrated version of Grantsdale. Its graphics come courtesy of Intel's Media Graphics Accelerator 900 engine. It uses up to 128MB of the 400MHz DDR 2 SDRAM installed on the system in dual-channel mode. Alternatively, Dell is offering a 128MB ATI Radeon X300 SE PCI Express graphics card as an optional extra.

The system ships with up to two 400GB Serial ATA drives with Matrix Storage Technology but only 100Mbps Ethernet.

Available in the US and UK now, prices start at $1369/£719 for the 8400 and $2599/£1179 for the XPS. The 4700 will ship in July - Dell did not indicate pricing
